    Tourist accommodation in France

Hotels, tourist residences, holiday villages, outdoor accommodation (camping sites and holiday parks), furnished holiday rentals and Bed and Breakfasts are the main forms of tourist accommodation found in France. All, with the exception of bed & breakfasts, may have an official rating that ranges from 1 star to 5 stars.

Making the right choice is now easier than ever!

The stars are an official guarantee of quality service and comfort. The new ratings, which were completely overhauled in 2009, are awarded by the government only after a thorough visit of the accommodation in question, which is verified every five years by independent auditors in order to ensure the quality of service and comfort. All rated accommodation is listed on the new website for destination France, making it easier for visitors to prepare their business or pleasure trips to France in full confidence by guaranteeing comfort and service equal to the level desired.

Whatever the rating, the quality commitments of every establishment rated under the new system are straightforward:

    • A welcome reception in a well-maintained establishment

    • Complete and reliable information on services offered

    • A concern to monitor customer satisfaction and deal with complaints

    • A staff sensitive to the needs of handicapped guests and to sustainable development.

Identifying accommodation rated under the new system

The next time you come to France, you will notice new signs on the façades of lodgings that have undergone and passed the new ratings tests. A re-assessment of every establishment is made every five years in order to confirm the validity of the rating.

Note Up till 23 July 2012, establishments are entitled to advertise their former rating, notably indicated by an octagonal blue plaque in the case of hotels. This rating does not conform to current commitments to quality and service laid down in the system that was revised in 2009 for hotels (the previous revision dating from 1986) and 2010 for other types of lodging. After 23 July 2012, only accommodation rated under the new system will be entitled to advertise a starred rating.
