    Vauban Museum

Designer of “the Most Beautiful Diamond in the French Crown”

Sébastien Le Prestre, who was given the title of Marquis de Vauban two years before his death, was called upon by Mazarin in 1653 to consolidate and improve security in the kingdom. To do this, Le Prestre designed a number of fortifications and strongholds and improved or built over 150 strategic defense sites throughout France.

The fortified citadel of Neuf-Brisach is considered to be his masterpiece.

Logically enough, the Museum of Military History is found on the ground floor of the Belfort Gate. Here, visitors can learn more about the site and then appreciate Vauban’s architectural virtuosity on a life-size scale with a tour of the area.
