    Saint-Nicolas Tower

An amazing view over the old port.

The Saint-Nicolas tower in La Rochelle, an authentic fortress, is 42 metres tall. It was built during the 14th century in a pentagonal design which reflected the power and abundance of materials which La Rochelle could boast of at that time. Along with the Chain tower it was one of two points which the heavy chain which blocked the access to the port was attached to.

Inside the enormous walls, the arrangement is rather convoluted, full of staircases and corridors. From the 28-metre high rampart walk and from the 37-metre high watch platform, the visitor can take advantage of a wonderful view over the old port.
