Before the X Century, this impressive location was home to an original shrine where believers went to pray to the Virgin Mary. When the untainted body of a hermit named Amadour (lover of rock) was found close by, the fervour enhanced, pilgrims flocked and seven churches and chapels, as well as a monastery were built on the rock.
Within the Notre-Dame Chapel, a black Virgin Mary from the XII Century holds her baby out to pilgrims worldwide.
At the Rocamadour battlements, visitors can take in the magnificent surroundings where faith seems to defy the laws of gravity.
