The museum opened in 1900 and was designed by the local architect Clément-Marie Josso. Around a central patio, the Nantes Beaux-Arts museum exposes collections from the primitive Italians to contemporary art movements. Among the collections are 3 paintings by Georges de La Tour, the Portrait de Madame de Senonnes by Ingres, Les Cribleuses de blé by Courbet, and works by Delacroix, Picasso, Chagall and Kandinsky.
In an educational effort, the museum puts on many exhibitions and cultural events.
