While its varieties (Gewurztraminer, Muscat, Pinot Gris, black and white, Riesling, Sylvaner) are internationally known and appreciated, in the 1970s Alsace still lacked a museum dedicated to its wines.
A group of friends formed an association to bridge this gap and were offered by the confraternity Saint-Etienne a space in the outbuildings of the château de Kientzheim.
Spread across three floors, the Museum of the Vineyards and Wines of Alsace explains to visitors the technical aspects of Alsatian viticulture: wine press, stills, vats and machinery involved in the automated process describes the operations performed after the harvest. Many winemakers' tools reflect the ongoing relationship between the vine and those who cultivate it.
