    Canal du Nivernais

    Water under the bridge...

It is under two aqueducts, to be precise, that the Canal du Nivernais runs its course.
The canal was designed in the 19th century to deliver wood to Paris by boat.
Today, only pleasure boats take this route or tourists on a cruise.

The canal starts at the town of Saint-léger-des-Vignes, linking the Loire basin to that of the Seine. Its 174 km therefore crosses the Nièvre area. It is punctuated with numerous locks and its vegetation makes it one of the most beautiful canals in France. It is possible to cycle the route, with a planned itinerary of 180km.
