15 km from Lourdes and 25 km from Pau, the Bétharram Grottos are said to be the most beautiful and the most interesting in the world. Because of their variety, the caves offer an insight into the development of an ancient world.
There are five different limestone formations, each carved out by the river over different periods.
Tours, which include a short boat trip and underground train ride with commentary, last around ninety minutes.
The grottos were first discovered in 1810 and opened to the public in 1903.
